When Father mysteriously goes away, the children and their mother leave their happy life in London to go and live in a small cottage in the country. 'The Three Chimneys' lies beside a railway track - a constant source of enjoyment to all three. They make friends with the Station Master and Perks the Porter, as well as the jovial 'Old Gentleman' who waves to them everyday from the train. But the mystery remains: where is Father, and will he ever return?

Why, then, did it take me almost a month to read this small children's book?
I don't know.
The book is clever. It has likable characters. It has a compelling plot.
I just don't know. It is definitely worth reading. But it may take you a while.
It is so refreshing to read a children's story sometimes. This one has all the makings of something that is woven through a time that, rather sadly, is not around anymore: children who Wander around being kind to a Mother with this capital letter and worry about a Father who is gone and left everyone pauper. They make tons of friends because they are sweet, and naive, and honorable, and there is a bit that actually made me cry (Perks' birthday). These are the moments when I do think of having children and surrounding them with books and love.
