**The first book in the new historical fantasy series from the author of Half Bad** A princess, a traitor, a soldier, a hunter and a thief. Five teenagers with the fate of the world in their hands. Five nations destined for conflict. In Brigant, Princess Catherine prepares for a political marriage arranged by her brutal and ambitious father, while her true love, Ambrose, faces the executioner's block. In Calidor, downtrodden servant March seeks revenge on the prince who betrayed his people. In Pitoria, feckless Edyon steals cheap baubles for cheaper thrills as he drifts from town to town. And in the barren northern territories, thirteen-year-old Tash is running for her life as she plays bait for the gruff demon hunter Gravell. As alliances shift and shatter, and old certainties are overturned, our five heroes find their past lives transformed and their futures inextricably linked by the unpredictable tides of magic and war. Who will rise and who will fall? And who will claim the ultimate prize? ****** The perfect new YA fantasy series for fans of The Red Queen, Game of Thrones and Sarah J Maas.

I dug this out of my tbr pile, trying to clear up old entries. I needed an uncomplicated, easy read, and it delivered. The demon smoke concept is an interesting idea, and I quite liked the development of Catherine. I am perhaps (still) too old to really get into YA fantasy, but as it is I might even grab the sequel in the future.

I don't know why this book took so long to get through. Her writing for the Half Bad trilogy was simple yet enticing—couldn't put it down. Aside from Catherine, Edyon, March, I didn't care much for the other two characters. I won't be buying the rest of the series but I will be borrowing them from the library. Audiobook. 2x speed.
