Hardly a month goes by that I don't mention a scene or another from this book / radio drama.
It would've been better if I'd stopped at the first book which I liked very much. From here on I was just very lost.
Douglas Adams is an amazing writer. He provides a lot of good, sometimes even intellectual humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one!
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy read by Stephen Fry is unique master piece emerged from works of two capable artist. Douglas Adams have pretty unique sense of humor which I had the pleasure to be acquainted with for the first time. I had no expectation what so ever from this book since I had not a pleasant experience from science fiction books in this nature. However I found the audio book performed by Stephen Fry quite amusing and entertaining.
Stephen Fry is a fantastic actor which illustrates his skills and arts within this book. Imaging the science fiction seens are way easier and enjoyable the way Stephen Fry read or better to say play the book. I have listen to plenty of audio books, this book is among the most enjoyable ones (another was The Alchemist read by Jeremy Irons).
Douglas Adams style within the Hitchhiker's Guild to the Galaxy caught me by surprise. He decorated his science fiction novel with hilarious circumstances, conversations, and pretty ridiculous and funny analogies especially when you least expecting them. (e.g.: .... He had an odd feeling of being like a man in the act of adultery who is surprised when the woman's husband wanders into the room, changes his trousers, passes a few idle remarks about the weather and leaves again. )
This audio book experience suggests good readers make the book interesting and exciting. I am not sure I would like the book as much if read by any other author.
hard to review this book, since its really 5 books. I like the first 2 a lot. The last 3 are descent, but it was much harder to get into them. Overall a classic series that I finally got around to reading.
My favorite trilogy of 5 books, H2G2 never gets old. The series has inspired so many pop culture references and a whole new category of silly SF. As long as you know where your towel is, you'll prepared for everything this wacky series throws at you.
“Anything that happens, happens. Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn‰ЫЄt necessarily do it in chronological order, though.”
A staple to the science-fiction genre, The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a collection of Douglas Adam's works. Comedic and poignant, Adams pokes at the insanity of our lives and space, combining them into a headspinning story of survival. Even if science-fiction isn't your genre, I recommend reading it in your free time. There's a reason this book is considered a classic and it's a fun read.
I got to page 472 which is where So Long And Thanks For All The Fish starts. For years upon years people have told me to read the hitchhikers guide and after finally getting around to it, I've realized its not just not written in a way that appeals to me. There is comedy there I know there is but the way its written is hard for me to get through.
My rating is based on my personal preferences and I do not think it should preclude anyone from trying the book out themselves and seeing if its for them. Just because I couldn't get through it doesnt mean that there isn't quality there for someone else to find.
Finished the first book. Not as funny as I remember from 20 years ago. Still very enjoyable.
