The Ungarnished Truth: A Cooking Contest Memoir

I like food. I like eating. I like Ellie Mathews.

Even though I've never met Ms. Mathews and I probably never will I feel a connection to her. I feel like I could sit down with her and her husband Carl - “hey Carl” and have a glass of tea or soda and feel right at home.

Anyway I feel like Ms. Mathews - “Oh, I can call you Ellie? Thank you, please call me Gregory.” - anyway, Ellie and Carl and my wife and I could spend a Friday evening playing hearts around their kitchen table after we've had a delicious meal - “We'll bring the salad.” and when Ellie comes to the table she will make some deprecating remark about how whatever we're having this evening will probably be barely edible, but we'll take that first bite and of course it will be delicious and satisfying...just like her book.

Oh by the way did I mention she was the winner of the Pillsbury Bakeoff? It's so easy to forget that. I liked this book a lot. I think you will too.
