The Visitor

The Visitor by Sergio Gomez was advertised for me as a suggested read and I purchased it immediately based off the cover art. Once I got it and realized it was an indie author, I was even more stoked. I don't know why but I'm apparently really attached to holiday horror reads this year (because I have even more). Holiday cheer? Holiday fear? 

This novella takes place during a terrible snowstorm on Christmas Day. What starts as a possible misfortune-to-celebration story turns dark before you know it. One of my favorite things about the story is the otherworldly scifi feel from this particular visit...I won't say more, you'll have to read it for yourself, but this holiday horror is a wonderful, bloody Christmasy adventure. A quick, easy read to add to the collection.

I wanted to read it for Christmas and it was the perfect size for such a busy time of the year. I think if you like Alien vs. Predator or even really just liked Prey I think you would like this in a way. I felt like Sergio pulled somewhat from that and I don't hate it. I loved the movies so and having it play some kind of base for this was really nice. Also the fact that I rather watch than read my Sci-fi is something and me liking this book just says something. There is something about mixing horror and Christmas that sends it to another level. It isn't something you expect on a happy holiday so feeling spooked by this book, even with the little that I did, means a good bit to me. All in all I really recommend this book to anyone who likes the categorizes listed above and if you like really short reads. That gift Sergio gives us is nice, especially for me who is in that group of people!

The Visitor is a fun bit of Christmas violence. It's short and a bit gory, and that's about it. The ending isn't great. The plot is nothing special. The characters aren't super well fleshed out. It's got some typos. But it's short, easy to read, and has a few cool scenes in it. Think of it as a long short story and enjoy it for what it is. 3.5 stars.
