God, I love when I find fiction that reads like an emotion. This one's a ghost story and historical fiction at the same time, and I just. So good. There's a lot of catch-your-breath lines where it manages to express something so well that you have to pause for it.

I think I liked this? The writing was lovely but it took me a while to get into it. Not plot-driven but liked the commentary of women being there for women when life gives them the worst.

This is a really lovely book, on a sentence-level, and I loved the range of seldom-told historical stories encompassed here. I struggled a bit to understand how all the stories come together, but I do have a known mental block for magical realism (and magical realism-adjacent stories).

I've been in love with Ruby's writing since Bone Gap. This was a great story (actually a story within a story within a story) that I found to be both horrifying and charming. I listened to the audio book, it was fabulous.
