This 1936 novel tells the story of an American fishing boat skipper who dabbles in a little smuggling to make ends meet. In need of money for his family the captain reluctantly becomes agrees to smuggle a group of Chinese immigrants from Cuba to Florida. This is Hemingway’s only novel to be set in the United States.

The first part of the book was engrossing, but I began to lose interest once Hemingway started playing with different POVs in each chapter. Sometimes that works well, but it did a disservice to this story. Overall, I'm glad I read this, but it doesn't come anywhere near his best works.

nare mensen, depressieve setting, vage dialoog, en bijzonder gul met uhmm negatieve omschrijvingen van personen met een andere huidskleur :/
