To Sir Phillip, With Love

Read this in one afternoon! This was great fun and I really thoroughly enjoyed pretty much everything about it. It would be 5 stars but i was a bit bothered with the handling of post partum depression and depression in general but I guess it was true to the time period so i can't ding it too much.

I look forward to the rest of this series!

De ontgoocheling in de Bridgerton boeken zet zich voor mij voort in dit vijfde boek, het boek van Eloise, één van mijn favoriete personages uit de Netflix-serie.

Opnieuw ontbrak het mij aan een geloofwaardige connectie of chemie tussen de twee protagonisten. Misschien als we wat meer van de correspondentie tussen Eloise en Phillip te lezen hadden gekregen had ik het allemaal veel beter kunnen verteren, maar nu viel het bij mij allemaal nogal flets.

Het personage van Phillip lag mij totaal niet. Terwijl hij bij de introductie wel potentieel had, werd die verwachting totaal niet ingelost bij het verdere verhaal.
Ook Eloise vond ik maar tweedimensionaal, waarbij haar enige speciale kenmerk gereduceerd wordt tot het zijn van een flapuit en kletskous.
Ik zou denken dat er met een personage in een boek veel meer diepgang kan worden gecreëerd, doordat je letterlijk in de personages hun hoofd zit, maar in het geval van Eloise verkies ik precies haar tv-incarnatie.

Two “breaths they didn't know they were holding”.

“She wasn't wearing a shift” - yeah, she was. Is it because of books like this the costumers think they can show girls in costume movies and series wearing their corsets on bare skin? They didn't. They wouldn't. Because 1) corsets are difficult to clean, and they weren't dirty bitches, and 2) it's not comfortable to wear a corset against bare skin.

It's not funny to have four guys burst into your dining room, abuse the butler and abuse the lord of the manor. And then have the heroines ponder about how these guys are the gentlest, kindest, wisest, best men in the world.

Also, the magic of the willow bark... hmm.

This was obviously a quick write. It was a quick read, too, and there was quite a lot of romance, so I can understand why Julia Quinn is a popular romance novelist. She is rather good, actually. But... because of some of the choices, only 3 stars.
