Angels are the new vamps and this book portrays them in an interesting and fresh fashion.
I enjoyed Clara, the main character's narrative and how the plot unfolded.
Lost a star for the rather anti-climactic ending, where the build up fell flat without serious consequences.
I feel like Cinderella sitting in the middle of the road with a pumpkin and a couple of mice, while Prince Charming charges off to rescue some other chick.
Just your run-of-the-mill angel book. We add one average yet not so average girl who finds out she's part human, part mystical creature, one mysterious mission and one predictable and irritating love triangle. We mix them together with a side of lame plot and sappy romance and voila: angel book!
Eh, the writing was all right but I'm not masochistic enough to go on with this series. I'll have to satisfy my curiosity by reading spoilers about the next books.
I'm really happy with how this book turned out! I wasn't expecting it to turn out like it did, and I thought the romance was going to be super cheesy and predictable, which it really didn't end up being, I think. I can tell that this is leading up some sort of love triangle, but if how things are now continue, then it won't be horrid to read. There's still a lot we don't know when the book ends, and that just makes me want to get into the next one!
I really thoroughly enjoyed this book! I didn't quite know what to think of it at first, but it was so easy to read and get into, that I couldn't help but love it. Really really enjoyed it!
Wow. This book more than exceeded my expectations. I think it's by far the best book I've read this year and one of the best I've ever read in my life. I was actually debating between giving this book four and five stars but the last few chapters really brought it home for me. And this is why.....
Do you ever expect to be disappointed by something only to have that something go above and beyond all your wildest dreams? Well, this is exactly how I felt with this book. Actually, I was almost certain that this book would cement my belief that I am officially growing out of Young Adult novels and that I should start reading more “grown up” books. Well, boy was I wrong. I'm not stopping with this genre anytime soon because no other genre has as much imagination and individuality. It's as simple as that, and this book is a perfect example of that.
To begin with, this book is about angels, and let's be honest this is a subject that has been written about extensively over recent years and I myself have read a bunch of books centering on these magical beings. However, this book is different because it digs deeper into the whole angelic phenomena and introduces the concept of purpose. And right of the bat, you feel like you can relate, at least I did because I often ponder the meaning of life and why each of us was put on this planet in the first place. This book has reached me to the chore and made me question my existence all over again. Not many books have done this.
One thing that I didn't like was that the book started off a little slow for me and it took me a little while to really get into it. However, once everything began happening and we got into the swing of things- I couldn't put it down for the life of me! Talk about ending with a bang! I mean, once I finished this book, I had to take a deep breath because it literally blew me away and made me see things from a different perspective.
The writing was concise and perfectly to the point and yet it was able to describe things perfectly as they were happening and I could see the events unfolding right before my eyes. Nothing was drawn out or lingered on for too long and the chapters moved quickly, even the earlier ones that were a little on the boring side.
Further on, characterization was top-notch. I actually feel like I could be Clara, the main character in the book. Her soul was laid out right before me to dive into and she proved to be a very special heroine. By special, I don't mean because she wasn't entirely human or because of her powers, but because she dared to defy and go against everything that was expected of her. That huge twist at the end.....there really are no words to describe it. This huge plot twist really made the book go from good to phenomenal in a matter of seconds. It was another life changing moment that made me question my own life as a result. Really did not see that one coming, at all. When she had to make a decision between love and duty, she made the choice that stayed true to who she was and for this reason she is one of the greatest heroines of all time. I loved that who she was on the outside didn't change who she was truly on the inside- I applaud her for this.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is that this book is unlike anything I have ever read before. Yes, it has a great mix of romance and action in it but that's only a tiny part of what makes it truly special. At the core, is an astounding heroine, who has inspired me and has me in awe of her. No, she is not perfect but she dares to act in a way that is true to who she is. I will definitely be reading the rest of the trilogy and can't wait to begin. All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who wants something different, something that will astound them and make them ponder life's toughest questions.
Alright, I only started this cause it's on the ‘Been There Done That' list of ‘100 YA must reads' and after like 4 other books about angels, only one of which I enjoyed, I'm just not putting myself through another one. I got 20% in and I have no interest to continue it.
Awalnya ragu mau baca ini, karena kelanjutan 2 bukunya gk diterbitkan oleh penerbitnya. Dan setelah baca memang menyesal, karena seri ini bagus banget dan penasaran sama lanjutannya. Si penerbit malah menerbitkan seri yg gk begitu bagus spt hush hush atau halo. ya sdh sepertinya lanjutannya baca online saja, kalo sempat wkwkwk.
Wow. It is so much harder to write great reviews than bad ones. What can I say besides WOW. This novel is beautiful. It is unputdownable. Clara is wonderful. Wow. I lack a good adjective for this book. Wonderful just isn't powerful enough.
I read this in one shot because I just couldn't put it down. The writing is stupendous. I was sucked in right away.
So, how to write a spoiler-free review and still prove to you that you should stop what you are doing and run to the bookstore? Hmm. I will point out my 3 favorite things.
One. Clara has a Purpose (don't we all, but her purpose is a purpose with a capital “P”). She never waivers about having a purpose, but instead grapples with how to remain true to herself while accomplishing her purpose. Clara is very mature.
Two. Clara is already on task when we meet her. Thank God, no angst about “OMG I'm an angel and now my life is ruined”. We are spared all of this...big change crap. This adjustment period, when focused on for too long or not handled correctly has ruined more books for me lately. We have none of this with Clara. She is okay with being who (what) she is.
A quick comparison here. Clara is great in the same way Rose is great in Vampire Academy-they are both comfortable in their own skin and have pre-set paths to follow. Clara is not as violent as Rose, but they both have gumption.
Three. This the best mother/daughter relationship I have read in a while. Yes, they fight in the book. It would have be unrealistic if they did not, but Maggie and Clara have this incredible bond. Maggie is a great mom, not perfect, but great and that is probably why Clara is so great. PS BECAUSE the relationship between Maggie and Clara is so great readers are spared the whole “hide my secret identity from the parents” bit which has also been weighing stories down for me.
My only issue is that I want more, like, NOW. I feel like hopping in the car and driving to Jackson Hole and knocking on doors until someone tells me what will happen next (or they lock me up for raving about angels in the mountains). Whatever. It will be a long wait for a sequel, and I can't wait.
