It's me, not the book. In fact, my issue is that the young age of the narrating character and her peers is too authentic-sounding and thus annoying and off-putting to me. I guess I'm just too damn old to deal with teenage characters who sound like modern kids, because it just makes me grumpy.
The flow of the writing itself was nice, if also a bit youngish and not showing quite enough gravitas for the topics being covered (mental health, domestic abuse). I assume it would become heavier and more tonally appropriate over time as the story unfolded, and I just didn't have the time to stick it out and endure the way the young'uns speak.
This book was so refreshing. I tend to shy away from YA these days because I often find them annoying or tedious - not here! I loved watching the main character grow and seeing her flourish. Her relationship with her friends and her family was so nice to see. All of the characters felt like they had their own life, not just in the book to serve the main character. I think this is a good book also to read as domestic abuse is often only talked about in Adult books, however can happen at any age, as illustrated in the book.
