Absolutely brilliant sequel to Nevermoor. I'm always afraid of a book two when I love a book one. No need for that here. They are so much fun to read but also really freaking deep, you guys. You find yourself egging Morrigan on. She's a freaking warrior...even if she doesn't know it yet. I may have teared up a bit at the end. Maybe. This series is everything.
But...Dearborn and Murgatroyd...shudder
Jessica Townsend has managed to create such a whimsical and engaging series. Wundersmith showed us much more of the world that Morrigan now lives in. We were brought right along on the journey on home train. Wundersmith gave us budding friendships, a new mystery, and big questions for a twelve year old to grapple with.
I cannot wait to see how Unit 919 is brought further into the fold of the Wundrous Society and what bigger evil awaits that even Ezra Squall fears.
reread 2020: I will protect unit 919 at all costs and once again mclosing it over possibly squall and morrigan teaming up to go against something WORSE THAN HIM?!
“Is that a children's book you are reading?” was the comment my mum made when she saw this sitting on the front seat of my car last week, there was a slight hint of mocking in her tone. My response was a resounding “yes” and in the back of my mind I was also thinking that yes it was the same series as my 7 year old daughter was reading the first book from. Was there any shame in my response, absolutely not. You see I believe firmly that just because a book is written for children does not mean it should not be read and enjoyed by adults alike because sometimes it's absolutely okay to read something just for the sheer magic of it and to relive the joy of childhood. And as a mum of 4 it also regularly allows me to sound of new and exciting authors and series that they might also enjoy.
Nevermoor was one of my favourite books of this year, I read is way back in January now and it's stayed with me ever since. It was a refreshing story of cursed child Morrigan Crow who is blamed for every single bad thing that befalls the people she knows and on top of that she is told her curse will cause her to die on her eleventh birthday and so on the eve of said birthday she is whisked away to a magical land called Nevermoor by an unusual man called Jupiter North where she is offered the chance to compete in a series of trials to allow her to join the coveted Wondorus society and gain the one thing she's always wanted, a family. I fell in love with Nevermoor, it was so whimsical and unusual and full of great characters and settings that I couldn't wait to get my hands on Wundersmith and was first in line at the library for this book when it hit the shelves.
Wundersmith was just as special as Book 1 and we are right back with all those magical characters we met in the first installment as Morrigan begins her training at Wunsoc, the magical school where members of the Wondrous Society are sent to learn all they need to know to use their magical talents. The only problem is that the only other Wundersmith alive who shares Morrigan's talent is the most evil man alive, Ezra Squall, and people are not keen for Morrigan to learn to use her talent in case she also turns bad. So with the help of her friends, her patron Jupiter and all the quirky and unusual guests who share her home at the magical Hotel Deucallion Morrigan has to find her way alone but people are disappearing in Nevermoor and suddenly she is being looked at as a suspect.
This book is another winning installment in what looks, and I hope will be, a long series following Morrigan's journey through Wunsoc. It was brilliant to get to meet all the great characters from Book 1 again like Fen the Magnificat and Morrigan's best friend Hawthorn. The magical setting is mesmerising and we can see a building story with Ezra Squall which we are unwinding book by book which suggests that perhaps he is not the only dark element in Nevermoor. I unashamedly encouraged my bookworm 7 year old to pick up Book 1 this month afte buying it for her and she is loving this series and we share our love of it together which let's be honest it's what makes children really engage with books when they can share their experiences with someone else.
An absolutely deserved 5 out of 5 for this book and I'd be very surprised if both of installments of this series do not show up on my top books of 2018 list in a week or so.
We wish we could give it a million stars!
We have loved Morrigan's further ventures, and can't wait for the next instalment.
A solid 4.5 stars
Loved this sequel: action-packed, full of revelations and of new questions. Can't wait to see how the adventure goes on!
Morrigan Crow attends school, though her classes are limited, and develops friendships and rivalries. She is taught that wundersmiths are the cause of a great deal of misery and wickedness in her world, and she questions her mentor Jupiter's assurance that this is not true. What is her place in the world? Will she simply become another source of pain and despair? What is behind the mysterious blackmailer and will her group of students be able to successfully cope with the blackmailer's demands?
Another intriguing fantasy novel. I await the arrival of book #3.
That ending!
This is a wonderful book in a wonderful series. So completely glad I discovered it.
Jessica Townsend has done it again! This next book in the Morrigan Crow series is almost as good as the last!
Morrigan has successfully passed the trials and is now a member of the esteemed Wunderous Society and Unit 919. On top of that, she now knows that she's a Wundersmith like Ezra Squall- a person who can make pure energy called Wunder and turn it into something greater.
However, despite her monumental Knack, Morrigan is placed in the School of Mundane Arts rather than the School of Arcane Arts. Even worse, her only class focuses on the history of Wundersmith mistakes- any and everything bad a Wundersmith has done throughout time.
When people begin to go missing around Nevermoor, Morrigan (albeit secretly) takes up the task of finding them- only to uncover the mythical Ghastly Market, but will she be able to save her friends before their Knacks are sold to the highest bidder?
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone meets Alice In Wonderland in Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow, which takes a bit of a darker tone than the previous novel making it so much more enjoyable.
Books 2 and 3 of the Morrigan Crow series were a light in between most of the listens I’ve been begrudgingly tackling recently and I devoured them because I just couldn’t with the others.
Wundersmith focuses on Morrigan in her first year with her cohort - sisters and brothers for life - yet it seems most everyone, cohort and teachers alike, is against her and believes she is dangerous. She is bolstered and validated by Jupiter, the staff at the Hotel Deucalion and her BFF Hawthorne. Blackmail to her cohort to keep her secret isn’t helping, people around her are going missing, and she gets multiple surprise visits from the evil Wundersmith. How will Morrigan make it through her first year?
