I finished it, but was having a very difficult time feeling engaged for the first 3/4 of the book. I liked the premise but ultimately felt like this book wasn’t for me.
A roadmap to de-boringify your life.
I read this book because I wanted to start the year off with a new mindset: Be more adventurous. Jon presents many anecdotes but also includes explanations on how his experiences are congruent with his EPIC model of adventure. I'll definitely come back to this book frequently to remind me to live more adventurously and make as many memorable days in my life as I can.
Anne is very entertaining. Her content is informative and encouraging. I'll need to go through all of the lectures again because I still feel grammatically stupid, but at least I am now aware of my starting point. :)
52 highlights. I don't think I've had that many highlights in a book in YEARS. So much clear-cut, good material and food for thought/action.
Excellent book. It really helped me think of acting methods and preparation in a new light.
02/01/2023: I finished this book for the first time 9 years ago when I was first starting to be exposed to acting. It makes so much more sense to me today.
I found myself laughing constantly. I also found myself wanting to find someone like Lina.
The marriage of hip-hop, street vernacular, and classical literature is prime. This is definitely my brand of book reviews. Sparky Sweets, PhD is the man.
In my opinion, the best supplemental reading you could do to better understand the role of the Savior, Jesus Christ, from the LDS/Mormon perspective as taught through the canon of Latter-day Saint scripture
This book is essentially snapshots of notable moments of Bryan's life. Very fascinating stuff. His advice and insight for actors is valuable and sprinkled all throughout the book.
The audiobook is by far superior to the print version. Gary gives updated answers and his voice comes through much better.
I heard this on Audiobook through Audible. One of the most entertaining memoirs I've heard. I'm a big Tina Fey fan.
I'm two chapters in and am already questioning the validity of this work. George says that baseball is the favorite sport of America. But that's wrong because everyone knows baseball blows....
That being said, I really liked his suggestions. There are many practical examples in this book and deserves to be re-read. I also like that it's 90% applicable content and only 10% Trump-praising.
01/28/2023:
The principle of starting with and never forgetting the reason WHY you started doing something is solid. And I appreciated the examples of multiple businesses (like Dell, Southwest Airlines, Apple, Costco, Walmart, etc.) and how their choice to follow or deviate from their initial WHY changed their entire business. And I can feel the author's passion for the subject matter with every paragraph.
However, like many have already stated in their reviews: the book is just too repetitive. Unless you truly want to do a deep dive and are as just as passionate about the topic, the TED talk would be more than enough to get the point across.
This was my second time reading this book. And I don't know if I would recommend this as a book to read cover-to-cover during 1-2 weeks like I did. It almost feels like each chapter could just be its own blog post that should be consumed little by little over time. If I could go back in time, I would probably read a chapter once every few weeks just as a refresher.
The story telling was top-notch and beautifully described the emotions of the athletes. I honestly had no idea the Tarahumaras were such badasses. The lengend of Caballo Blanco (the gringo that went to live among the tribe) and the science explained in this book has made me want to put on my shoes (actually, take them off and replace them with running ‘huaraches') and pound the track again. I don't think I have any Raramuri blood in my ancestry, but I feel a desire for spiritual connection with these people.
I see my own life reflected in this book. I'm currently in the beginning stages of something similar to where Alex was in the first three chapters and this book just fuels my fire. I look forward to re-reading this as I progress through my own journey. This book was simply amazing with so many important takeaways in every chapter.
This book helped me look at success differently. Throughout the reading, I found myself analyzing my own backgroun, trying to piece together where I, or my ancestors, had gone wrong and what was done right.
A great read!
An important view point that you shouldn't overlook. Empathy is good, but within certain parameters.
