As a Last Kingdom - LK (book and TV) series great fan, I was incredibly disappointed with this one - where LK is serious and dark and warrior-mindset like, this is melodrama, soap-opera/telenovella great passions and romance.

The male MC is a non-descript Mary Sue that does not seem to exist (so far from Uthred), the female MC is ridiculous and annoying and wildly-reacting to anything (plus everybody wants to rape her, that seems to be her main role in the book, rape-target), the antagonist is pumped-up nasty in a ridiculous Banderas style and so on.

The writing itself is better here than LK, but the story and characters are teenage-drama level.

The battles are very well done, but too few among the plenty passion-drama moments.

I bought the entire 4 book series at once - now they all go straight to garbage.

So, final warning: if you are a Last Kingdom fan, this is NOT for you!

overlong and over-boring - the description applies to almost all the stories, and it definitely applies to the anthology as a whole, which I consider a failure. I am a history buff and also a scifi fan, so I expected and wanted to love this book. But I did not.Most stories are not badly written, on the contrary; unfortunately, they are utterly uninteresting.the only exception being Chalker's ”Dance Band on the Titanic”, but even that is not a 5/5 because of the lame ending.

most of them were 1/5s and 2/5s for me, although they were not really bad, just very forgettable - and many not really horror, but just ”new weird”. There were a few 5s, though, that raised my overall impression, like those from Joel Lane, Tim Lebbon or Joe Lansdale.
Not a bad book, and still rather enjoyable as a past time, yet not at all a memorable one.

A highly mixed bag of very good, okay and bad stories. Too mixed and too large for its own good. If half of them had been left out, the other half would have made a great anthology. This is not nearly as good as Wastelands 1, but also not nearly as bad as W3. Otherwise said, not great, not terrible...

Captivating, fast-paced, diverse and interesting, it is a good entry-level attraction to ww2 for the young/less read public.
For the ww2 maniacs (like myself), it can be often annoying by some basic mistakes (like Wehrmacht paratroopers... really?! they were Luftwaffe personnel, a totally different arm; or ”Zeke, as the kamikaze were known” - no, Zeke was the plane type; or Bulgaria declaring war on Germany in... 1943, and so on) and general half-documentation, most likely willingly done so by the author to make some quite ordinary coincidences into ”wow! mysteries”.
Still a fun read.

Pierde o stea pentru că e prea lungită, mai ales pe final (are peste 900 pag), și pentru că oferă prea mult spațiu unui personaj care nu e credibil ca individ, ci e mai degrabă un McGuffin (mă refer la Kurtz).
În rest, pentru mine a fost de 5/5 pentru că a fost SK de stil vechi, gen IT (la care și face mai multe trimiteri directe, din moment ce o parte a acțiunii se petrece în Derry) și pentru că deși a pornit de la o idee răs-banală (invazia omuleților gri cu capul mare, e parțial SF), tot a ieșit o carte captivantă. Și pentru că îmi place la SK atunci când un grup de prieteni se confruntă cu un monstru simultan clar și totuși extrem de greu de înțeles și previzionat.
A, și spre deosebire de foarte mulți alți cititori, pe mine nu m-a deranjat excesul de flatulențe, fecale și vome, din moment ce-s justificate medical și nu doar așa, din burtă (pun intended pt cine știe ce monștri are cartea).

very good graphic presentation, but extremely few details for each gun, and even those are mostly about caliber, length and so on, the historical details being mostly overlooked. The fact it is only in inches and so on makes the reading difficult for, well, the rest of the planet (silly them, using logical measurements not worth mentioning in this Murican book). There are also some editing mistakes (an article starts on a page but is not continued on the next or anywhere else).
It is useful just for identifying guns. Which nowadays one could easily do online, by googling....

Yeah, good scientific speculations, some very good philosophical dilemmas, but no story, no tension or action, no characters (just names talking to each other, but with nothing to set them apart as personalities), lame and dry writing... in short, extremely boring. I actually “did not like it”, the extra star is for the speculations I thought myself because of it.

Înțelegere greșită de R. Campbell 2/5 - bine scrisă, dar fără mare lucru de oferit ca idee; un fel de Stephen King, dar fără originalitatea sa
Alice prin folia de plastic de R. Shearman 2/5 - începe bine, dar finalul este o hipstereală; întâi nu l-am înțeles, apoi l-am priceput și mi s-a părut un fâs
Bărbatul din șanț de Lisa Tuttle 5/5 - foarte bună, misterioasă, circulară în sensul bun, cu mai multe nivele de profunzime, te lasă parțial nelămurit, dar într-un sens bun
O problemă de copil de R. Oliver 5/5 - excelentă, în stil clasic de 1800 ghost story+detective story (descoperirile fiind făcute de un copil de 8 ani), dar mai sardonică și întunecată, mai rea. Și aceasta se abține să ofere totul și lasă cititorul să speculeze indiciile.
Ceva trist și întunecat de MM Smith 5/5 - foarte bună, captând excelent acea senzație de melancolie a Americii rurale decăzute (foarte a la King), cu suficiente detalii încât să fie captivantă; lasă misterul complet ne-explicat, într-un sens bun
În apropiere de Zennor de E. Hand 3/5 - o povestire tipic britanică, în stil Mythago, cu potențial de a fi excelentă; din păcate mult trasă în jos de lungirea și răs-lungirea autoarei, care omoară cu plictis tot zvâcul. După o vreme, devine o corvoadă de citit. Păcat, ar fi putut fi excelentă într-o formă mai alertă
Ultime cuvinte de RC Matheson 4/5 - are doar câteva pagini, din care toate în afară de ultima mi s-au părut un non-sens haotic și execrabil, de 0/5; dar apoi vine finalul care iluminează totul și o trasformă în foarte bună

Romanul a fost promovat ca cyber-noir - de fapt, este 10% cyber și 90% noir.
Dacă vă place genul policier, merită citit, este un noir scris foarte corect, cu bifarea majorității șabloanelor genului și cu o intrigă relativ complexă, care nu permite ghicirea criminalului. În unele privințe mi-a amintit de The Expanse, mai ales în atmosferă. Dacă v-a plăcut Expanse, o să vă placă și CM. Mie nu-mi plac policier-urile, deci m-a ratat (și plictisit) cu brio.
Dacă îl aveți în vedere ca cyberpunk, din punctul meu de vedere puteți să-l săriți: are câteva idei originale, dar cyberpunk-ul este doar fundal și decor, ratându-și complet condiția sa principală, după cum observa și Florin Pîtea la el pe blog, și anume rolul de comentariu social.
În plus, aici (fiind debutul său) Richard Morgan nu e prea eficient cu scriitura - motiv din care vă recomand ca alternativă ”Omul Negru” - mai matur, mai bine scris, mai cyber și da, mai comentariu social. Pe acela îl consider de 5+/5, așa că rămân fan Morgan și după această nepotrivire de caracter cu CM.

I have read a lot of books in this genre (shorts 100 about battles, guns, tanks, uniforms, aircrafts and so on) and while some were bad and most were goodish, this is clearly the jewel of its kind. First, it is not dumbed down for dummies, as I see the nowadays trend grows - so it dares to lose some potential readers (the mentioned dummies) but manages to not annoy the regulars. Second, though using only 2 pages for a battle, it still manages to convey plenty of data, and, most crucial, the really significant facts, supported with maps, general and tactical, well-selected pictures and snippet-descriptions and illustrations of relevant units, weapons or generals. Therefore, the whole image is way bigger than just the article itself. Even further, every battle has an excellent ”Battle Facts” abstract (who, what, where, when, why, outcome) - which in a few lines summarizes and irons into the readers memory the essence of the battle.
