When I picked this book up, I thought it was going to be another smutty book with no plot and all about the relationship between the MCs. I was very pleasantly surprised that the plot was actually super good in this book! I loved the overall story line, was super into the angsty love, and the way the overarching plot developed and set up the storyline for the rest of the books of this series. Can't wait to read the rest of them!
Tropes:
- Forbidden Love
- Fated Mates
- Forced Proximity
I really liked this book! It kept me captivated the entire time but after finishing the book and coming off the book high, I started noticing some letdowns that I didn't think about until then. For example:
- Why did it feel like the story did not fully end? From what I understand, this is a standalone but it felt like the author kept it open for a potential sequel.
- The manifested nightmares could have been so much more interesting! The sky was literally the limit. I would have loved for something to play out more chaotically, like dreams normally do rather than following logical rules and feeling more like real life situation playing out.
- The whole half stone heart situation. Clementine's personality/emotions didn't really change considering the huge sacrifice her heart half turning to stone was meant to be.
- There were some other things but these are the only ones that come to mind now.
So although i immensely enjoyed reading this book, it just needed something more to be a great read.
This book was exceptional! What a great story! It totally kept my attention from start to finish even though it was heavy on the world building, and technical when it came to explaining how things functioned in this original fantasy world.
The plot was so well developed and thought through! I love the unique setting with the massive leviathan monsters that are kind of looming over the entire book as a potential threat. The gigantic layered walls built to keep them out and a military society built constantly fight them off is very reminiscent of Attack of the Titans and I'm not mad about it.
The murder mystery element was amazing as well. No random tidbits thrown out throughout the book are wasted and every character we meet has a purpose.
Din and Ana were such great characters, and were the perfect duo; very reminiscent of Holmes and Watson. I love how brilliant and chaotic Ana is, and how she held all of her deductions close to herself to surprise both the reader and the other book characters when the time was right. Din on the other hand is straight-laced and proper but is willing to step outside of this box when necessary for his ambition and the greater good.
I'm really hoping that future books would give us more background information and insight into Ana character. There is so much more that can be explored in the plot and I cant wait to see where this series goes!
I'm so impressed with this book and would recommend it to anyone what wants to read a solid murder mystery set in a fantasy world with great characters, unique setting, and captivating plot.
I received this as an ARC from Netgalley.
I can't with this book. Like what the heck! How does it keep taking me by surprise? I mean how did SJM write the perfect guy?! He's understanding, he's beautiful, he's dark and mysterious, he gives Feyre the freedom to figure herself out even when it goes against everything in him to let her, because he wants the best for her regardless of how much it hurts him personally. Like what??? Good thing I'm already married because my expectations are way too high for the male population right now.
It took me forever to start this book because the plot never appealed to me whenever I came across it for some reason. Everyone going crazy about it on Tiktok finally gave me the push and I was honestly not disappointed. Everything about it was amazing. the plot twists, the characters, the world building. SJM knows what shes doing.
My least favorite of the series. Could have been half the length and I didn't really like the female main character. She was really naive and inexperienced but acted like everyone should listen to everything she says.
Also, the romantic element was kind of weird as well. Cant really go into detail without spoiling it but I did not really vibe with it.
Wow what a great book! So cozy and whimsical. I loved the dialog, the narration style, the world building. Tress was such an amazing character! One of my top books this year!
I'm so sad that this book was so disappointing. The premise sounded so great on paper and I was so sad it did not deliver. The premise ended up being so weak, the characters were unlikable and lacked growth, it wanted to be deep but failed on all accounts. This book lacked any original thought and was a completely bland story.
Wow this book was so good! Heather Fawcett has really outdone herself in her top notch writing and world building. Her writing is just as descriptive and attention grabbing in this book as the first book and the characters have my entire heart! The relationship between Emily and Wendell made me so happy and I thoroughly enjoyed their banter and relationship progression. I love how complimentary their personalities are to one another and I eat up the golden retriever energy that Wendell has! I loved getting lost in this story and cannot say enough great things about it!
3.5 stars
I love the unique and fresh world building in this book, and that the author was not afraid of writing a character who is selfish and morally grey, but felt like this was a weaker book than the first one. It was still a fun read but did not suck me in like the first book did.
I thought this book had a lot of promise when I read the synopsis. It promised to be wistful and nostalgic and have an endearing love story. However, once I started reading it I quickly realized that there were a few fundamental issues with it.
1. The author had a lot of trouble picking appropriate words to describe the mood or the conversations that were had in the book. A lot of the words she used did not fit the environment of the book. Many times I found myself wondering if it was supposed to be set in Victorian England rather than modern Portland, Maine. It felt very scripted rather than flowing like a natural conversation should have been.
2. Also, it was cringy just how many times she used the word “as” in place of words like “since”, “because” etc.. Or instead of just changing the sentence structure for it to flow more naturally. For example:
a. “I don't want to disappoint you, either, as you're taking a chance....”
b. “I have a staff of fantastic people who are the glue that holds me together, as I needed their guidance...”
It's ridiculous how many times she used “as” in that way. Every time I'd come across it, I had to resist the urge to toss the book across the room; and there was many, many time the urge welled up.
3. For some reason, everyone is always snickering in this book.... Why are they always snickering??
Overall it seemed like there was not a lot of thought that was put into the book. The author did not take time to think of context, or getting an interesting build to some climax that needed to be resolved. The climax of the book was just a minor misunderstanding between the 2 main characters that got resolved in like half a day. Not to mention the book had a bunch of grammatically questionable things like multiple dialogs being thrown into a single paragraph, which made it hard to distinguish the different people speaking. This is easily one of the more disappointing books that I have read in my lifetime...
DNF'd at 30%.
I received an advance review copy from BookSirens.
This book is classified as New Adult but reads like it written for kids. The characters are two dimensional, the pace is too fast, the conversations are really lacking. I like the idea for the plot, but it needs a lot of work.
DNF'd at 70%. This book was terrible. Had chapters from character perspectives that were unnecessary. The female main character was intolerable/annoying and too dumb to survive. The male main character was a shmuck. I just could not keep going.

Pretty decent read overall! The writing quality was good, and the plot was thought through. My only complaint is that the pacing felt a little too fast, like they just casually hung out a few time and are all of a sudden deeply in love. I think if there was more depth to the characters' personalities (that includes the side characters), the plot, and the MC's relationship, it would have the potential to be a great story.
I loved the awkwardness between the two main characters through. That was definitely a great addition, and worked really well in the story!
I tried reading it but honestly, this book feel like a lower quality From Blood and Ash fanfic. At least in the beginning. I didn't get past the first 3 chapters.
My favorite of the series so far! I love the unconventional MMC who's described as being as ugly as a beast. But it just makes the love between the main characters that much sweeter!
Cute Cinderella retelling focusing on a fairy godmother type character who sucks at magic and gets caught up in a murder that she has to solve with a handsome detective way out of her league. I love a plot point that has a FMC oblivious to how the MC feels about her and this book definitely delivered on that.
I did not find myself enjoying this one as much as the first one. I feel like it did not keep my attention throughout the story and I found that I had to force myself to pick it up each time.
I also did not enjoy the Io/Bianca dynamic and wished that the whole first part of the story did not take place as a journey with the two of them. Also, a lot of the premises felt weak and not fully explained. I did not find myself enjoying the conclusion either and hope the Author will add an Epilogue before the book gets published to show what happened to the characters and society in general. Felt like the story just abruptly cut off and wasn't satisfying.I received this as an ARC from Netgalley.
Super immature main character who thinks she can do whatever she wants without consequence, and thinks that everyone is out to get her. It wants to be sexy and fun but definitely a lower YA book thats trying to market itself up to upper YA.
Terrible book. Lots of basic mistakes made by the author that made the story drag on and on! What purpose did the she have to describe every single meal Diana ate or every time she slept?! Good writers have a purpose for every seemingly random situation in a book, and I kept trying to figure out what purpose she had for Diana's culinary narration. Finally realized that there was absolutely no purpose for it other than than Harkness's inexperience as a writer.
The romance in the book between the two main characters was cringy at most. Also, the book sets itself to build up to some intense climax to happen at the end of the book, and something did happen, but it was really disappointing. I don't know if I am being too harsh but given the amount of buzz around this book and the fact that they made a TV show about it I expected to be at least a decent read.
A pretty boring book overall. Got through about half of it on Audiobook and couldnt bring myself to finish it. Merlin feels like a really flat character. I'm not sure if the author intentionally made him this way because he isn't a normal human and is supposed to be above normal human emotion, but it made the book really anticlimactic without any highs and lows for the character which would typically makes a character really relatable and lovable and gets you really into a book because you feel the emotions they are feeling and what to go through the experiences with them.
1000/5 stars!
This book was everything it should have been! was heartbreaking, adventurous, emotional, action packed, romantic, made me cry for the last 200 pages.
Everything resolved itself in such a satisfying way even through this build up has been going on for 8 books! It's so bittersweet to be done with this series.
Great book! SJM knows how to write a good story. The POVs were all super interesting and I love the cast of characters and all of the things they go through. My heart hurts for all of them, especially Dorian. Excited to see how Manon's story develops.
