An adventurous and precocious boy, Jess Hall is very protective of his older brother, Christopher, a mute whom everyone calls Stump. I actually might have given this 4.5 stars if I could. I was instantly immersed in the characters and their intertwined stories. The book is emotional, and has some dark themes, but there is also optimism in the way some people change themselves in positive ways.
Excellent writing and character development in this dark book. An inside look at some communities misplaced trust in shady religious figures.
