I would have probably read this in one sitting if I didn't start it so late yesterday. A truly creepy read and I felt bad for Amanda and Ed. I plan on reading more of the authors work, I really enjoyed this!
One of the least evocative books I've ever read. It comes across more like a disposable creepypasta, and much like these brief online horror stories, it isn't remotely chilling or disturbing . Its brevity is to its credit, as it works well as a palette cleanser or throwaway holiday read.
At first it starts with a simple tapping in the apartment, explained away as a drippy pipe, or perhaps a mouse. An urge to start smoking again and more frequent bickering with her husband. Amanda, a successful young architect, feels a vague sense of unease at the changes in her life. As time passes, Amanda refuses to accept the improbable cause for these changes, with horrifying results.
At 169 pages, it's a short book, and Gran's writing is so clean and succinct that it feels even faster. The sparse writing creates a break-neck pace that causes a sense of panic for the reader, who cannot stop racing toward the same terrifying end as the protagonist. The ambiguity in the story is one of the novel's best qualities and is what draws the reader in. Is the overshadowing of Amanda's will and her seduction the result of demon possession or of insanity - and does it matter?
This is a truly horrifying story that is not about cheap scares and gory scenes, but rather the slow loss of control to which any of us could be susceptible.
obsessed with this. obsessed with the writing this is exactly the kind of tone i hope to one day be able to pull off and urgh. just obsessed

In the beginning I was enjoying it and watching things unfold but as time went on I was meh about it all. Nothing really big on the horror aspect. I found the main character to be slightly annoying. It is a short read so if you have time to kill I suppose this will help you reach your reading goal.
This was so weird and well written. I was glad to read about a real possession, no twists or surprises, just a downward spiral that was addicting and easy to read. I thought this was the perfect length and pace, and read the whole thing in one sitting.
Very much an overhyped read. Wasn't that scary or even psychologically trilling. The ending was disappointing too but was probably the only scary part.
It's funny because I wasn't even looking for this book and have never heard of it before. I was perusing my library and saw the cover (different cover version for Kindle - face covered with red misting like blood spatter) and snagged it.
Quick, creepy and unsettling. Reading about a women becoming possessed made for a very unique read scattered with frightening moments. There's a part where the demon says that she couldn't do it without Amanda and that made me think...how many of us have this kind of dark side where deep, deep down we would welcome this kind of “freedom”.
I usually enjoy this theme of a plotless story of watching a woman slowly lose her mind but this one was just so boring. Nothing happened... In a bad way. Nothing about this made me want to keep reading but since it was so short I made it to the end. Ending felt unimaginative and anticlimactic
This novella was great! It's a short, gritty look at someone who is slowly losing grasp of reality and falling into a hole of self-deprecating horror. Amanda is smart, pretty, has a great job, and a stable marriage—until she starts to see an invisible friend. This invisible friend starts to haunt her dreams and make her do things she doesn't want to do—or does she?
It is a hard book to talk about without spoilers, but early on, I think you get an inkling that this is much more than an otherworldly possession tale. The manifestations, the odd behavior, the perpetual habits, and the forbidden desires point to something hidden deep in her persona. Try as she might, she visits spiritualists, doctors, and therapists to help put her mind at ease.
What is being unlocked in her psyche to make her do these awful things? Some people try to hide these urges day in and day out, but for Amanda, it might be a little too late.
