In this exciting debut, author Keri Arthur explodes onto the supernatural scene with a sexy, sensuous tale of intrigue and suspense set in a world where legends walk and the shady paths of the underworld are far more sinister than anyone envisioned.A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne's Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races--and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker--until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn't be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming....Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she's going to find her brother....Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful--and delectably naked--vamp who raises her temperature like never before. In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior--by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind--and just how much it needs her. From the Hardcover edition.

I got this free with Stanza in what I can only imagine is an attempt by the publisher to try and get people to buy the rest of the series - I still feel short changed. I don't think I've come across a published book that reads as much like a bad teenage fantasy as this... and I've tried to read the Twilight ‘books'.[return][return]If you want a bunch of bad deus ex machinae, wooden characters that all have the same voice, and some really bad semi-furry sex then read away. Everyone else, life's too short.
I loved this book! It reminded me so much of Kelley Armstrong and Laurell K. A must read if you like those two authors. It focused on sex a lot, but it didn't embellish it so much like the newer Laurell K's do, there was actual story! A nice twist to werewolves.
I like strong heroines, lots of action, multiple subplots, character development, a good storyline, and compelling writing; and this book fulfills. Riley Jensen is a powerful personality, whose paranormal abilities are only beginning to surface. She is being courted by her twin brother's, Rhoan, covert agency to be a guardian and she is resisting those overtures. The disappearance of her brother, though, causes her to forge an uneasy alliance with the agency in order to rescue her brother.
A lot of reviewers complain about the amount of sex and the rape scene, but, Riley's drive to have sex at the full moon phase is secondary to the plot other than it nearly defeats her ability to solve her brother's disappearance and the larger threat behind it. The book also sets up a future love interest for Riley in the form of the vampire Quinn; and, it's clear that Riley could easily be monogamous if Quinn were only able to set aside his distrust of werewolves caused by previous betrayals of the lupi kind.
