A lovely book about 4 precocious sisters and their adventures on vacation. Simple and lovely. A great book for kids.b
Is there a better feel-good story? Barring further entries in the series, probably not.
Looking for a series that offers the kind of gentle reading experience that those of us among the older crowd read commonly as children? You will find it in The Penderwicks. Long, adventurous days of exploration and imagination and fun...with no intrusion of worries from the grownup world...that's what you will get in The Penderwicks.
Excellent little tale :-)
As said “a summer tale of four sisters, two rabbits, and a very interesting boy. There's also a hound, another very interesting boy and a very scary lady involved.
It reminds me a lot of Little Women, with the girls moving in to a cottage for summer and befriending the rich boy of the mansion next to the cottage, but the Penderwicks have a father, but no mother.
I do not approve what mrs. Tifton did, no respectable lady would ever even allow oneself to think that way, not to mention actually saying it out aloud! As they say, money doesn't buy class.
I have a little warning, though. In the beginning Skye calls dibs on choosing the room, but is forced to accept the Hound selection, which she hates, because she always loses it - and she loses it again. At that point I was about to throw this book to the wall for being so very, very, very unfair. They could have let her keep her dibs. Now, it ends well anyway, but it was nevertheless unfair. They should have said “let it go for this time, but never again, OK?”
I am also glad about how the problem was solved. I wish all the children in the world would dare to trust their parents to listen to them, and I wish all the parents in the world were worthy the trust. (If this is a spoiler, tell me, so that I can hide it.)
one of those clean cut, family friendly, summer romps (with the dog and the children under 12 and the hijinx!) all ends well of course. no cellphones, only one ‘work' computer, no internet (plausible for a summer vacation??) single kindly, wise dad + dead mum. good for middle readers. ppl who like the way things used to be.
I only started but I can say it is beautiful. I have found out that I can't read books for children like this one ‘cause I get bored but truly I have to say it's a good one.
