It's a fun read. But I have a question: Dude has been creating the same immortality potion every single month for the last 600 years or so, but he can't remember how to do it without the book? And he didn't think of copying the recipe down in another place as a backup? Hopefully, an explanation for that will be forthcoming in the next book.
I loved the world that Scott created and the way he incorporated so many myths and legends of various civilizations. It is fast paced action and lots of imagination. The characters at least thus far are rather straightforward and flat. I'm hoping that changes in further books. I wouldn't have expected it as the novel covers two very full days and is the set up for further books. We are introduced to many characters through the novel. The straightforward characterization makes it easy to keep them straight. We have hints of deeper motivations within them. It makes me excited to read the other books in the series.
Guess who loved this? I mean, I love the way Michael Scott added all this characters into the novel, real history characters. Characters you don't normally talk about. Characters that are latex down into forgiveness. He saved those characters. And all the beautiful things he tells along the book. And all of this in a teen novel! I mean, it's more than perfect. He teaches us all of this! And it's just so interesting. I really recommend this to anyone! Not only teenagers, but also young adults, adults and maybe even some kids with an open mind.
This was a free book from Amazon. I read it and liked it and will probably buy future books. Although the next two are at $9.99 right now, so I may wait until the prices drop.
This is a young adult fantasy book. I have seen it compared to Harry Potter, but I don't think that is a great comparison. It is two modern kids that help out an man they know and find themselves at the center of a magical battle.
It is a pretty good read, but at the end of the book, you are really just getting started in the story. So I assume it will be about the same quality in the next two books.
A longer review is on my blog at http://bookwi.se/the-alchemyst-the-secrets-of-the-immortal-nicholas-flamel/
I actually picked this book up by mistake, but decided “what the heck” I would go ahead and read it and I am glad I did! This was a great little read. I will defiantly check out the other two books in the series!
