I think Rollins is beginning to get a little tired in this series. The history/science is as interesting as always. The story of Baako often crept into sappiness.
4 stars.
Well loved the concept of Moon and 37. (Remembered hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy - 42)
Also Joe's character was written amazingly.
Like all the books in this series, I liked the big ideas, connecting various
mythological things together to create an interesting puzzle.
But...
There is a long talky bit about all kinds of different ways you can take various numbers, do a varietyof arithmetic operations on them and get the number 37.And we are supposed to be deeply awed by this. It's a bit like being impressed to discover that while everybody knows 6+2 = 8, did you know 4 + 4 = 8!There are two parallel adventures going on here and while both are interesting, I missed how they were connected except that both involved some evil Chinese people. And once again, our heroes make a discovery of a civilization changing repository of historical artifacts and then blow it up ( I think this happened 3 times in this book). This time, it was caused by one of the characters picking up a marble which starts the self destruct mechanismand instead of putting it safely in his pocket, he promptly drops it and loses it.
I enjoy these books and will continue reading them, but I have to take a break after reading one or two.
I feel like a broken record by this point, but 11 books in and I'm still astounded by research which goes into these books. I absolutely love the mix of science, history and adventure and loved being back with the Sigma guys and especially Joe Kowalski!
The only reason this isn't a full 5 stars for me is that this one felt a bit samey, I'm sure we had a similar plot with altering genetics in Black Order and The 6th Extinction. I will definitely be continuing with the series but hope the next few instalments mix things up a little.
Listened to this one on audio and the narrator (Christian Baskous) was brilliant, the voice he did for Joe was exactly how I thought he should sound! :)
