Just re-read and got all teared up at the end. When I first read this book in elementary school, I loved the details of how they survived on their own. Now I wonder why their grandfather had never seen them before. What happened in this family?!
Also, this was originally published in 1942, so counts as “a book published between 1900 and 1950” for the Read Harder Challenge.
I love the adventure and the innocence. No crazy plot twists or dark motives. Just a misunderstanding. Also lots of fun.
This always made me want to live in a boxcar. I thought their idea of using a hole behind a waterfall to keep their milk cold was the smartest thing in the world.

I'd never come across this book as a child but I think I'd have thoroughly enjoyed it then. It's very sweet with a little jeopardy but an overall feeling of comfort. Even the cruelest characters are pretty kind.
I love tales where children take care of themselves in a (mostly) adult-free world. While it doesn't come up to Blyton's Adventure series (my favourites as a kid) it's still worth a nostalgia read.
The books were originally written to encourage reading, the simple language and enjoyable story would have been perfect in it's time. I'm not sure how much today's kids would be engaged - they probably learn to read from Tik Tok!
