This is a good back story for big fans of The Expanse series. It's not necessary to read, but it's worth it if you have a little bit of extra time. It doesn't leave a huge lasting impact though.
Really great look into Fred Johnson and what has made him into the character we see in the main series! Really enjoyed this
Nothing particularly remarkable about this short novella, but it does provide some crucial background for Fred who you meet in the first book.
This is a great side story that adds to the character development of Fred Johnson, but I think this could easily be put into the main books.
3.5/5
While Fred Johnson isn't a favorite of mine in terms of Expanse characters, it was nice to get a look at his perspective surrounding the events of Anderson Station. I do think the show's handling of the event was a little more impactful, whereas this short story sort of danced around it until the end. The inclusion of Anderson Dawes wasn't as gripping as Corey may have intended it to be; I would've been finding just getting more out of the Anderson event.

“They made me the poster boy for disproportional response. They made me a butcher”.
Great read. Solid character building for Fred.
This was a really short read on the plane. I already knew the basics of Fred Johnson's backstory, but this fills in some more details in how he goes first becomes the Butcher of Anderson station and later joins the OPA. Nothing really that insightful, but still enjoyable enough. 3.5 stars.
This was a good short story to give some added background to Fred Johnson. It is really short and I wish it was a little longer but I enjoyed learning more about what makes this character tick.
The weakest of the Expanse novellas. Tells the backstory of Fred Johnson. I remember thinking it was OK as I listened and now I can't remember almost anything that happened in it.
“They made me a butcher.”
True that.
This is not just the story of how he became The Butcher, it's also the story of how the OPA recruited him after that. There's no much to say without spoiling the whole thing. This is what really happened back then. A must-read for The Expanse fans.
