This murder mystery takes place in period of history I knew nothing about, 19th century Korea. I'd recommend it if you're interested in historical fiction. The plot was fairly convoluted for a YA novel. It did hold my interest though.
This is so much more than I expected. Family drama, religious wars, police procedural, and a strong young woman. I had no clue who the murderer was. And even when I found out who the murder was, I was still surprised by the ending. This book is just so much more than I expected.
Абсолютно непривлекательные главные герои. Причины поступков инспектора Хан хоть и объясняются, но для меня явно притянуты за уши. Словно автор не знала что с ним делать, как закрыть в конце его арку и пошла по самому лёгкому пути...
Historical murder mystery set in 1800 Joseon. It leans more towards police procedural with political intrigue going on in the background, but I enjoyed it a lot. Very atmospheric, can be quite dark at times, and a bit slow at the beginning but picks up about halfway through the book. It definitely has that unique beauty in subtlety that only Asian fiction or authors have, even during the most dramatic parts.
As far as main characters go, this is an excellent example that a strong female main character doesn't have to be literally physically strong with a strong (read: rude) attitude and without any flaws whatsoever. Seol's interactions with Inspector Han were so good even if in a not-exactly-wholesome way, and the nature of their relationship makes the ending terribly bittersweet.
Also, no romance here. Just family drama. A lot of it.
Heck yeah, reminded me a little of Kel of the Tamora Pierce Knight series. Only solving mysteries and experiencing family trauma.
