The Vile Village

Once again the Baudelaire children escaped Count Olaf on the last second but lost their friends for it. In this book they are sent in a village where all the inhabitants are supposed to take of them. We soon see the “craziness” of the adults, they don't listen to the Baudelaire and force them to work for the town an enormous amount of time each day. But we quickly have some news of their friends, the Quagmires.
This particular book is a real turn of event for the rest of the series we start to see it of something bigger that just the unfortunate adventures of the orphans. They also take a big decision at the end of the book. The rest of the series promise to be different from what we are used to.

Een volledig dorp heeft zich als voogd voor de Baudelaires aangeboden.

De kinderen kozen het dorp omdat het de naar V.F.D. heeft, maar dat blijkt gewoon Village of Fowl Devotees te zijn, met allemaal kraaien die elke dag van de ene naar de andere kant van het dorp vliegen. Ze gaan leven bij klusjesman Hector, die leeft bij de boom waar de kraaien elke nacht komen slapen. De stad heeft een hele resem regels — geen boeken, geen uitvindingen, dat soort zaken — maar in het geniep houdt Hector zich daar niet aan. Nieuws: Olaf is gevangen! Maar het is niet Olaf maar Jacques Snicket, die even later dood teruggevonden wordt. De Baudelaires worden van de moord (op “Count Olaf”) beschuldigd door detective Dupin (Count Olaf). De Baudelaires ontsnappen, vinden na een reeks tips via gedichten de Quagmires terug, Hector heeft een grote luchtballon gebouwd waarmee ze kunnen ontsnappen, maar enkel de Quagmires slagen erin, de Baudelaires moeten vluchten.

Yup, het verhaal is anders dan de voorgaande boeken, die altijd hetzelfde patroon volgden — en er verandert nog wel meer: Mr. Poe is niet meer in beeld, de Baudelaires worden zelf als criminelen bestempeld, ze krijgen dus geen nieuwe voogden maar worden integendeel gezocht, en Graaf Olaf moet zich vanaf na dit boek niet meer verkleden.

I have been binge listening to these audiobooks, 2 on Sunday, 4 on Monday, 1 today (because I read finished another book here inbetween), and can't be bothered to write a good review :-D

Anyway, what this book is about is up there.
I hate the descriptions of words. There aren't that many in this book, which is good.
The story feels quicker. Which is also good.
I'm glad they managed to rescue whom they managed to rescue. Less glad about not managing to rescue themselves.
And if I had tried to say something, and was interrupted THREE TIMES already, I would tell the Baudelaires to shut the fuck up and LISTEN for fuck's sake for once! Yes, yes, I know, it's for the sake of tension, but enough is enough!

My boy Klaus just had the saddest birthday party in the history of ever.

In this one the children are burdened with an entire village of nincompoops, as well as having to deal with their recurring crowd of nincompoops. The whole mob thing was particularly frutrating I won't lie, but hey, at least there was one (1) positive outcome at the end, instead of the usual zero positive outcomes from all the previous installments!
