While I believe Britney's parents completely abused her & abused their power over her & the media treated her like utter shit, I feel like there is something really insincere & hollow about this memoire. I'm sure this was very cathartic for her to get out, but there are so many stories that feel incomplete & one sided and the book is riddled with contradictions. I feel like Britney took no accountability (aside from saying she was “real bad” hehe) for her own wrong doings and instead blamed almost every other person in her life for everything that's went wrong. This reads like a middle school diary, mostly immature, child-like thoughts with no continuity... not a book from a middle aged woman. I was hoping to hear more about her time on MMC or get some more insight on writing, making music & touring with a little bit of tea thrown in.
Like others have said, It seems like she googled herself and went down the bullet points and scandals, the things the media speaks about the most, and gave her side of the story. Good for her, but it felt like it was lacking honesty, in my opinion. Unfortunately, this just wasn't my fav. I wish Britney the best of luck and hope she can truly heal from the things she has suffered.
I am glad Britney had the opportunity to share her story and sad that she had to endure so much from people who should have supported her.
Wow. what a roller coaster of a book! So sad in so many ways, but a great eye opener. Great reminder also of how much we should be grateful if we have people around us who love and support us just for who we are and not what they benefit from the connection.I wasn't a huge Britney fan cause I didn't grow up in that Era but I respected her artistry so this was devastating to read; just having to absorb what she went through was a bit emotional for me ..It is good book though
I don't really like giving memoirs star ratings because who am I to judge someone else's life story. Although, I didn't love the writing, Britney has clearly been through a lot in her life and deserves all the happiness and success she can get. So 4 stars.
I learned so much about Britney in this book. The writing felt off though. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it but it all felt short and quick to the point sentences. I'm glad she was able to get her story out and I hope it will help a lot of people to see how restricted she really was.
I listened to the audio version, which is read by Michelle Williams. I loved the way she performed Britney's story. She made her voice soft at certain parts, the way Britney may have read it herself.
Justin Timberlake was not the biggest villain in her story. Yes, he was a big one. He deserves to be cancelled for how her treated her.
The real villains are her family. I felt so bad when listening to how Britney was treated and how she felt during the conservatorship. By the people who should have been protecting her the most! Ugh. I cannot image how I'd feel if my family turned on me. It just goes to show how bad people can be when a lot of money is involved.
I understand why Britney may not want to see any doctors at this point, but I hope she finds a doctor she can trust to get her off medications she doesn't need to be on, safely. And a therapist, who will be in her corner.
I admit, I watched the shitshow go on, her downward spiral, when she shaved her head. Now, knowing she was going through severe post pregnancy depression, I want to give her a hug and say I'm sorry. Someone should have gotten her help, not taken advantage of her situation.
You may start reading this memoir for the JT gossip, but you will finish it feeling for Britney.
Holy good god Britney, she has survived SO MUCH. Heartbreaking and rage inducing.
“Freedom means being goofy, silly, and having fun on social media. Freedom means taking a break from Instagram without people calling 911. Freedom means being able to make mistakes, and learning from them.
Freedom means I don't have to perform for anyone— onstage or offstage. Freedom means that I get to be as beautifully imperfect as everyone else. And freedom means the ability, and the right, to search for joy, in my own way, on my own terms.”
Wat een prachtige bibliografie! Heel heftig om te lezen wat ze al die jaren heeft meegemaakt en hoe ze zich er mee om is gegaan
Sad Yet Beautiful
As an avid music aficionado, my admiration for Britney Spears' music has always been tempered by a sense of detachment. However, prompted by a colleague's recommendation, I delved into her much-anticipated memoir, an experience I now cherish. Britney's ability to write her life journey on her own terms struck a chord within me, eliciting a profound sense of sympathy for the trials she endured without the support she deserved.
The heartbreaking realization that her family primarily viewed her as a source of financial gain, rather than a beloved family member, cast a somber shadow over her story. Michelle Williams' expert narration of this poignant memoir offered fans a rare glimpse into the sheltered world of the iconic superstar.
Britney bares her soul, recounting her early aspirations to break free from the clutches of poverty and an oppressive home environment, shaped by the presence of a domineering, alcoholic father. Her relentless pursuit of fame became a beacon of hope, a means to transcend her tumultuous beginnings. However, the glow of stardom seemingly masked a darker reality, as her family failed to recognize her profound struggles with loneliness, depression, and persistent sorrow.
The memoir chronicles a pivotal moment in her life, the infamous incident where she shaved her head and lashed out at paparazzi, ultimately leading to a thirteen-year-long conservatorship imposed by her father. Throughout this period, every aspect of her life was meticulously controlled, enabling her father to reap the benefits. The narrative underscores the brutal exploitation she endured and her subsequent fight for autonomy.
While the memoir reveals certain intimate details, the overarching lesson remains the steep price of fame and the importance of speaking out against any wrongdoing witnessed. Yet, as I delved deeper into the narrative, I found myself grappling with unanswered questions, particularly regarding the absence of any mention of a reported mental health diagnosis. This silence prompts further speculation and an unsettling sense that more remains hidden beneath the surface.
Despite these lingering uncertainties, the memoir is a testament to Britney's resilience and fortitude. Written with emotional depth, it stands as a poignant portrayal of her struggles. Michelle Williams' masterful narration through the audiobook adds an extra layer of brilliance, elevating the entire experience. Hats off to Britney for her undeniable contributions to the music industry and her unwavering courage in sharing her truth with the world. She truly embodies the spirit of a superstar.
I encourage readers to approach Ms. Spears' story with a spirit of empathy and understanding. It's a poignant yet strikingly beautiful journey. For those interested in listening to Michelle Williams narrate the heartbreaking tale of Britney Spears, please find the link below.
A deeply personal and tragic tale of a woman cursed by family trauma and used and the flaws of fame. I've been a fan of Britney since I could even talk and hearing her own story with her own words has been a revelation to me and has given me an appreciation for her. Love you forever Brit.
This book was an incredible ride and can easily be read in one sitting (I definitely did). I wish they didn't leak some of the bombshells early, but there's still a lot of interesting things in this book - some you'd expect and some you wouldn't.
I appreciate in this book how Britney takes accountability. She doesn't try to be a perfect person and owns up to her mistakes. She was so carefree at one point and that was slowly taken away from her and ultimately ended in her conservatorship.
Britney covers pretty much all the highs and lows you'd expect - Justin, Kevin, the paparazzi. She even gives a nod to the infamous MTV VMA performance that went wrong. But there are a couple of lesser known things she doesn't address. She doesn't mention anything about “Original Doll” (her mysteriously scrapped album). She also doesn't address any of the controversy about the lip syncing or the ghost vocals in later albums. Also, since this came out pre-divorce, she calls Sam her husband and there is absolutely nothing negative about him.
Overall I recommend this to pop music fans, especially Britney fans. It's an easy read, but it gets pretty sad several times too. I still think Jessica Simpson's book has a slight edge, but this book was really solid too. Now all we need is Christina Aguilera's tell all memoir and the trilogy will be complete!
3.5/5
I had the chance to listen to the audiobook version while doing chores and errands. I found myself surprisingly familiar with most of the things she discussed in this memoir. Credit goes to my older sister, who is a devoted Britney fan back in the early 2000s. Our household was constantly filled with her music, the MTV music videos, and thanks to her cassette collection of her albums, This pre-existing knowledge allowed me to not only follow the book's narrative but also connect with the emotional journey Britney describes.
One of the most striking aspects of the Britney's life is her incredible rise to fame. The book portrays a young girl from a small town thrust into the relentless spotlight. It's on a scale almost unimaginable in today's world. Her transformation from unknown teenager to global pop icon feels so rapid, it makes you wonder if, in today's terms, she wouldn't be considered an “industry plant.” Britney, however, transcends that label. Her raw talent and undeniable charisma are what truly propelled her to superstardom. Gosh who didn't have a crush on her back then?
She became the ultimate mega-star, a cultural phenomenon with the likes of Michael Jackson or Madonna. Lady Gaga might come close, but no artist has quite managed to capture the public imagination in the same way. Britney's music dominated the airwaves, her dance moves were imitated everywhere, and her personal life became a constant tabloid headline. She was truly EVERYWHERE in her prime. She was the last of her kind.
The book delves into the darker side of fame, particularly the intense scrutiny and control Britney faced. It's hard not to feel a surge of anger on her behalf as the narrative details the controlling influences in her life, from her family to her past relationships. The book doesn't shy away from calling out those who exploited or manipulated her. This raw honesty makes the book both empowering and heartbreaking. (FUCK YOU JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE)
The most important takeaway for me is the hope that she finally finds true happiness and freedom. No more forced performances, no more living for the expectations of others – just genuine joy and the chance to reclaim her own life. In sharing her story, Britney not only inspires but also reminds us of the human cost of fame and the importance of fighting for your own voice.
Very interesting to read about such an icon of pop music, and from her perspective.
i <3 britney and thats all that matters
i think its hard to really judge a memoir so i wont
I thought this was a very honest, raw look from Brittany Spears at her life. She knows that some of the decisions that she made wen't always the greatest, but who among us wouldn't say the same things about our own lives.
She was very young when she started singing and has become a very strong woman, but along the way she feel in love with the wrong men and she also trusted her family to have her back, which they didn't. Then when she wasn't able to see her children and was suffering from Post-Partum depression she was left on her own and hung out to dry in the press and with her own family who profited off her misfortunes and then took over her life with a conservatorship.
The story made me feel sad for all that she has endured, but I feel she's in a better place in her life now and hopefully she has come through the worst of things. A great read for Brittany fans as well as for anyone who has ever been let down by their family or made to feel as though they aren't good enough.

I wish nothing but the things you deserve and I can say none of them are nice.Ryan Seacrest, Matt Lauer, and Diane Sawyer are trash. Forever going to be trash. Don't even get me started on the paparazzi. I seriously think laws shouldn't protect them. If they get hurt or their stuff gets trashed that is their problem and their fault. And society back in those days, what trashy people. Nosey good for nothing trash. People demanding to know more about her life, like they have some fucking say. You people are what fed those paparazzi and people like Ryan and Matt and Diane. Joan Rivers, never rest her soul, is also in that list people who were never worth the time.I am so sorry Britney had to fucking go through this. How grown ass fucking humans couldn't act with humanity. I am not Britney and I wish nothing but the worse on these people. As for the book, it was well done and am so glad she was able to share this all with us.
If you knew me at all in the late 90's and early 00's, you know I loved Britney Spears. I had posters, calendars, every CD, I made choreography to her songs, I had t-shirts, and pretty much every other fan paraphernalia that you could think of. My husband patiently let me show him multiple, what was then considered conspiracy theory videos. I followed the freebritney movement closely and up until her recent divorce was paranoid about her being okay. This book was exactly what I was expecting, which is equal parts depressing and relieving that she is in fact okay now. As much as I would love it if she decided to make more music or do an actual interview with a respectful journalist, I am also glad that she is only going to do it on her terms if/when she is ready. I hope the relationship between Britney and her kids gets repaired and I hope the rest of the Spears family gets what they deserve.
In "A Woman in Me", Britney Spears takes us on a whirlwind journey from her roots in Louisiana to the glittering stages of international fame. What sets this memoir apart is Britney's unapologetic honesty. She lays bare the highs and lows of her life in the spotlight, giving us a raw and unfiltered look at the chaotic world of celebrity.
You can't help but admire her strength as she confronts the darkest moments of her past with courage and determination.
But through it all, she's like a phoenix rising from the ashes, showing this incredible mix of strength and vulnerability. She has went through so much, and I'm glad she now has found her peace.
While I don't consider myself a Britney fan, I used to listen to her music or watch her videos on MTV while getting ready for school. Still, I'm glad I picked this book up. This book was easy to read and listen to, it felt like listening to a friend talk for hours
Wow. Definitely tells all. I’m sad that she had to go through all she did, but I’m glad that period of her life is over.
