Beautifully mundane with heartbreak at every corner, this book's prose tackles the ever-present sadness one can have in life, and sneaks up on the reader with vivid descriptions of the human condition that invite tears to journey across reddened cheeks. I cannot compliment this novel enough: a must-read for those who feel the need to tackle their own melancholy.
beauitful prose, good story, but unfortunately laden with problematic elements that would stop me from recommending this to anyone
absolutely fucking fascinating but the book would not let me forget it was written by a white british man in the 1950s
4.5
Gorgeously written. I feel honored to be able to experience such a heartfelt glimpse into the Palestinian experience. Despite this book's importance as an artform that cries out over wanton loss, and death, genocide, and imperialism, I felt that as a book, it had too many named characters that are only mentioned once so the plot would get needlessly confusing.
I adored it, and will probably recommend it to anyone who will listen. Regardless, I feel like it would have truly been an undeniable 10/10 if the book spent more time and care developing the dynamics between the main cast: some more scenes of them just being loving friends is all I'd ask.
cute and light story abt grief but trigger warning for some light transphobia (a little confused but they have the spirit)
Kinda like naruto in the sense that it has really good, exceptional peaks and the rest is bland and repetitive. I hope the next parts fare better.
A true journey in every sense of the word, with a masterful sense of pacing and style. I feel like it opened a portal to a sort of zeitgeist pre-WWI that allowed me to grasp at least a grain of what the typical european civilian experienced. Personally loved how the narrator treated the main character like a guinea pig they inserted into experiments and how they'd make jovial mocking remarks about him. It made the narrator a character too, that you could converse with, who you were in on a joke with. Very cool.
