HOW CAN ONE GIRL SAVE AN ENTIRE WORLD?To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, Lessa is nothing but a ragged kitchen girl. For most of her life she has survived by serving those who betrayed her father and took over his lands. Now the time has come for Lessa to shed her disguise--and take back her stolen birthright. But everything changes when she meets a queen dragon. The bond they share will be deep and last forever. It will protect them when, for the first time in centuries, Lessa's world is threatened by Thread, an evil substance that falls like rain and destroys everything it touches. Dragons and their Riders once protected the planet from Thread, but there are very few of them left these days. Now brave Lessa must risk her life, and the life of her beloved dragon, to save her beautiful world. . . .From the Paperback edition.

Hmm, I think I missed out by not reading these all those years ago, when my high school teacher/librarian told me I'd like them.
Am I an awful person for hating this? I tried to read this years ago and couldn't get into it, and so I thought I'd try again because everyone and their mother loves it. I have no idea why. This was probably one of my most disliked books of the year; stilted, boring, and awkward. I mean, I enjoy a lot of things other people would find terrible, so I can't judge, but I have no idea why people love this so much other than “Dragons are cool!” Which isn't a bad reason at all, actually.
Dragonflight holds up very well on re-read (after several decades). The story of Lessa, F'lar, and the other people of Pern still resonates. I had forgotten how brilliant, headstrong, and impetuous Lessa is. And vengeful. Don't cross her!
I would probably give this book 4 stars were it my first read. However, I will honor the opinion of my younger self and leave it at 5.
I must say I am surprised at the number of haters this book has gained. Mostly they take the form of “The characters don't think/act like I do, so it's baaad.” I am tempted to write something unkind, but nah.
Good book. An SF classic.
