If you're reading for a book club, then you can skip the book and gaslight the group by saying, “None of it is true” over and over again
I listened to this book and I'm glad I did. Part of the [fictional] story involves a podcast in which the narration included interviews from the podcast. Good narration and a story which keeps you guessing.
this was a disturbing concept and the twists definietly added to that it was missing an oomph factor, and if it had that i would have LOVED this but it didn't. i still overall had a good time reading this book and the ending was shocking with the escalation of it all. the audiobook i will say is phenomenal and i highly recommend that format of consuming this story.
Read this book immediately. It is one hundred percent worth the hype as it currently perches at #8 on the NYTIMES Bestseller List. Lisa Jewell has outdone herself with this one. I spent the hurricane reading this one. I even read by candlelight because we lost power during Idalia. It was unputdownable. Best to go in knowing little to nothing about it. I'll leave it at that. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Thrills, chills, twists and turns expertly delivered on all counts. This book is dark as pitch but oh so very good.
Was enjoyable but I think was too long. Some of the beginning parts were boring and could have been cut while the end felt anticlimactic and rushed. Liked the podcast and documentary element though! Would like to see this in a tv miniseries.
3.75 stars
This book was really enjoyable for me but the ending was just a bit of a letdown for me.
Also Alix Summers was really weird cause all of the signs of Josie not being mentally stable was there and she still willingly put herself and her family in danger.
I'm giving this 4 and a half stars because I don't know what to think of the ending. This book had me hooked from the first sentence and took me less than half a day to get through. Absolutely thrilling and mind blowing. My only disappointment is the ending.
Like every second woman at this point, I love true crime stuff, with the caveat that it's not emotionalised bullshit. I want facts, not a narrator talking about the victim's smile lighting up every room. Fuck off with that cheesy, ridiculous stuff.
So I looked at this and was like “okay, maybe I can try”.
And it was awful.
We have Alix and Josie, two women with polar opposite lives. Alix is a glamourous podcast host and Josie is a repressed, humble housewife. All they have in common is having been born on the very same day at the same hospital. So when Josie begs Alix to document her breaking free of her life, they start working together on a project.
You know, a book like this needs exceptional character writing. We have two people interacting, yet somehow both of them have the inner monologue of the exact same type;that overly detailed one that pretends to be deep by “noticing” ridiculous shit you never specifically think about. Or do you look at people and start thinking about random details regularly? In every bit of your thinking?
Plus, with a book that is based on the contrast of these two, at least make them sound sufficiently different.
The twists were not much either. Like there aren't many ways you can spice up a story with so few characters and so little going on between them. If you can't guess it... what's wrong with you?
After years of reading mostly fantasy, this isn't enough. It's so basic and so uninteresting.
Wow! I'm still reeling and not exactly sure what happened in the end. This is definitely my favourite Lisa Jewel. I couldn't put to down.
Lisa Jewell really knows how to write messy characters and messy family dynamics
5 Stars!
Odd, thrilling, and dark.
I always needed to know more. It had me guessing what was happening, and what could possibly be coming. So many characters, who was telling the truth, who was lying.
I liked the format, of interviews, headlines, and podcast recordings. It was a nice break throughout the book from regular chapters.
Highly recommend this addictive thriller.
3.5
When I first started listening to the audiobook, I was a bit confused of the formatting of this story, so I went to my library and borrowed the hard copy. Once I got more into the book, I understood that some narration in the audiobook was specifically for the podcast and for the Netflix adaptation! Suspenseful music is added and background voices can be heard. For this reason, I highly recommend the audio book over the hard copy.
I just feel like i've been gaslighted throughout this entire story, quite literally from beginning to end, & i don't know what to believe❤️ my psyche has been taken advantage of❤️
i love the way L.J. writes characters, they're so fleshed out & i feel like i really know them
if i'm being COMPLETELY honest though, i was expecting a bit more & it just didn't deliver (maybe my expectations were too high?) this is my second time reading a book by L.J. – the first book (invisible girl) i gave 4 stars as well
i was also expecting more from that book & it didn't deliver but the story itself was still really good so it didn't bother me as much? same with this one. i think the problem i have with her stories are the ending, but (subjectively speaking) the journey towards the end is really what makes reading her books worth it!
to be fair i'm really big on how the end of a book wraps up, i'm for sure an ending person so that really determines my overall opinion/rating for the book! so the ending is where i've been let down with this author's work (that i've read so far) other than that i love the writing i truly do
the full cast audiobook of this novel was amazing & the podcast aspect was such a neat touch i enjoyed it very much!
A must-listen!! I was locked in from the very beginning. I could not stop listening until the end!
how is it possible that SO many people closed their eyes and gave this 5 stars ?
the mother said that her daughter stole her husband from her ? excuse me but the problem is not your young daughter but your pedophile husband
omg I can't believe the hype that this book have, I actually have no words im so annoyed
also the way that is written the ptsd that Josie had and her reactions towards men, made her look like an extremist feminist who want to “kill all men”
it discredit the feminist cause, ugh im so pissed off
easy 5 stars one of my favorites ever and this is definitely next to then she was gone. I enjoyed the podcast/documentary part a lot and it was SO unique. I definitely think this could be a top 10 book for me. Lisa Jewell will forever be in my top 2 authors because she was the one who got me back into reading
