I have such conflicting thoughts on this book.
The first half was so amazing and absolutely terrifying. It truly shows the lengths parents will go to protect and care for their children. That if some evil thing that is bigger than you or I asks you to do something - you do it, you don't falter, and you get who you are there to protect.
My big problems with it came with the second half. It felt like it was all a little too easy and wrapped up too perfectly. I understand needing to get the villains and the heroes all in the same location for the ending but it was just too convenient. The twins didn't get as fleshed out as anyone else to me. We got their backstory about how they have always been evil but it didn't satisfy me enough for them the extent that they went to get rich and create such turmoil in other peoples' lives.
I love McKinty's Sean Duffy Novels, and this one deserves 4 stars based on originality of premise and execution of this kind of book (airport thriller?). It is pure calories and the sugar rush is great but I am going to line up [b:Gun Street Girl 22551891 Gun Street Girl (Detective Sean Duffy, #4) Adrian McKinty https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1421011905l/22551891.SX50.jpg 40265576] for my dose of protein.
3.5 ✨ this was extremely thrilling, fast paced and unputdownable! i love how this book felt like a movie and created an atmosphere of anxiety, but everything seemed almost too perfectly tied up at the end. it was too simple. i predicted the creator of the chain correctly and was waiting for another twist... but none came. overall, i liked the action and the plot, but the characters were flat and mediocre & the ending was odd.
An tense and gripping thriller. A real page turner. Keen to read more by this author.
This book was great in my opinion! From the very first sentence I was hooked and I could not put it down. I mean I read it in one day so that speaks for it self.
I equate reading this book to watching a fast paced, action packed thriller movie.
Part one was excellent. Truly amazing, no complaints. Part two in my opinion was still great but a little obvious and predictable in a few ways. Still, it was pretty damn great and overall I was pleased with how the story ended. I had no idea where this story was going to go or how it was going to end, but, personally, I am very pleased.
The book was very gripping, and a fast pace that kept me hooked throughout .There were some parts included that I felt were there just to make the book longer.
I appreciated how it felt like a movie and the way it built an atmosphere of tension and suspense. However, the way it ended felt a bit too neatly packaged. It seemed simple, and even though I correctly guessed the creator of the chain, I was anticipating an additional twist that never came.
I read this authors other book The Island a while back and that was a 5 star! So will def be picking up more books from Adrian Mckinty soon!
Came across this book on TikTok and it was hyped up as one of the best thrillers/books that could not be put down. I agree this book lived up to that standards. However, the plot of the story was very anticlimactic. I expected the story to have more of a “WOW” factor, but it did not give that at all. The story behind the Chain was just a story about how it started. Ginger being related to the Chain was pretty much a given seeing how predictable the story was going. It was a good read don't get me wrong, I was hooked from the time I started it. I just expected a lot more from the book and this is to remind everyone to manage your expectations accordingly.
This one of my first adventure into the adult thriller/horror genre, so I dont have many reference point.
But this book was great for beginners like me. It was very fast pased and had an Interesting premise.
I also liked the way it did not flip between pov's in a pattern, the pov always added to the feeling and movement of the story.

The house is musty and empty. A thin layer of dust coats the kitchen surfaces. No one has been in here since early September. She closes the kitchen door behind her and explores the home.
Three uninteresting levels and a very interesting basement with brick walls and a concrete floor and nothing in it but a washing machine, a dryer, and a boiler. The house is held up by a series of concrete pillars and she could, she thinks in disgust, chain someone to one of those pillars. She checks out the little window above the dryer. She'll cover that with a board she'll get from the hardware store in town.
Rachel shivers With a mixture of fascination and revulsion. How can she think about this sort of thing so glibly? Is that what trauma does to you?
Yes.
It reminds her again of the chemo days. The numbness. The feeling of plunging into the abyss and falling, falling, falling forever.
The Chain
She looks at her watch. Not yet five o'clock. This morning when she woke up, she had been a completely different person. As J. G. Ballard pointed out, civilization is just a thin, fragile veneer over the law of the jungle: Better you than me. Better your kid than my kid.

While this writting style is my favorite, this book I have some flaws. Part 1 is a 5/5 star should've just been left there point blank and the author himself intended it to be that way. Part 2 was predictable and boring not very entertaining and it DID NOT FLOW at all to part 1 what so ever felt like 2 seperate books and it should've been left alone. I will read another book from this author but I am very angry at how this turned out.
Was definitely an interesting story, and feels like it should have its own short series on Netflix. Only lost me as the some pieces felt a bit too unreal, and some of the writing felt a bit cheesy but very good overall.

The story is okay but the writing was a bit childish and it DRAGGED. Also it is very much a “Man's Romance”. Lol At first I was all for my ship sailing and then Pete (aka Adrian) had to let me down. There were some funny moments and don't get me wrong, with some clean up and a more hashed out writing, it could be a good story, well a better one.
I only read this book because of the Timothée Chalamet puppet on The Tonight Show, and I don't know what you'll get from that kind of information, but I also went into this with low expectations. The premise of this book didn't really get to me for some reason but when I started reading the book, it left me intrigued and captivated. The characters really sucked me into the story, especially, the main character who will do everything just to get her daughter back. The first part of the book was indeed very fun and exciting. However, in the second part, the story dragged on and the pacing became inconsistent. The “reveal” was not really shocking to me, in fact, it became so obvious which led it to an anticlimactic ending. In spite of that, I still really enjoyed this book.
Absolutely nuts and unbelievable but totally gripping and hard to stop once started! Definitely recommend the audio with January LaVoy narrating.
I enjoyed it overall!!!! 4.5 stars because the middle got kind of cringy and rushed, but it definitely picked up again in the last third. I definitely wish Erik had a longer stint, I really enjoyed his character and his part was super refreshing. Overall, very interesting concept and I liked the ending!!!!
3.5 stars. A unique book that I couldn't put down. Definitely worth a read if you're looking for a quick engrossing thriller. For 75% of the book I thought it would be a solid 4 stars. The ending isn't bad, just a little carried away.
Overall I liked it. Some parts dragged on a little too long explaining in minute detail things we don't really need to know. This was still a wild ride from start to finish.
Wow...what a ride! This certainly looks into the deepest part of a mother's heart and what would do for the survival of their family and protection of their children. “Life is fragile, fleeting, and precious. And to live at all is miracle enough.”
Let me start by saying, wow, the concept in itself is 5 stars. The first half of the book is 5 stars.
However the second part of the book kind of fell apart for me a little bit. The plot twist was ridiculously predictable. And there were quite a few inconsistencies and mistakes that i found.
Still would recommend this tho. Such a unique setting and we'll executed.
