This was left on a table in a cafe, with a Post-it note saying, ‘Take me home and read me. Then pass me on'. Not one to argue with semi-adhesive stationery, I did as it said.
I wasn't expecting much from it, to be honest, but it was a fine, enjoyable read. It's not going to set the world on fire but entertaining none the less.
I've released it back into the wild to carry on spreading the words of the tall bloke off the telly.
It is a cozy, it has plot holes, and it is a delightful little bit escapism spiced with some interesting characters. It is funny and homespun truths bounce around in the dialogue. Worth a read if you like books that don't need or stand-up to tight scrutiny. Just enjoy.
Nothing groundbreaking (hence three stars) but still very enjoyable, and contrary to what several others are saying in reviews here, it's not that convoluted.
3.75 - cheeky, twee, too long, and yet I couldn't stop listening. Ugh. On to the next.
Of its genre (cozy mystery in very middle England) this one was a jewel of a debut novel with strongly executed and delightful characterization and an excellent observer of all things english. This was a balm of a book in this election run up.
A cozy murder mystery, very entertaining with very manipulative and witty characters.
I enjoyed it a lot.
It was a captivating story with a few interesting twists and turns. I'll definitely read the next one!
A fun read about a group of amateur sleuths in a retirement community who make friends of suspects, partner with the local police, and solve a murder along the way. Fun dialogue among great personalities.
This was lovely. Quiet British. Great characters to fall in love with, and a whodunnit with many twists and turns.
This was impossible to read. Hella boring, the author rambles a lot and does not introduces us to the characters so I couldn't connect with them on any level. I'm really sad about this because I thought I would really enjoy it.
I started reading this March 10 2023 and I never got into it and people kept recommending it so I decided to try it again.
I don't get the hype... well written, no flat characters and some are charming but do I need more of this? No. Will I think about this book again? No. Was there anything new and fun. No. Where was all the humor people claimed was in this? I don't get it... just another meh for me. Dull as a 2 star but not poorly written so I feel a 3 star is fine.
Very funny, I loved all the characters and was invested right from the get-go. Will definitely read the rest of this series.
I'm a “Pointless” fan and a lover of mysteries and so was keen to read “The Thursday Murder Club”. I enjoyed the read but I felt it meandered a little at times and while I really liked the twists and turns I would have liked a little more suspense and shock in the reveal of the twists. These little points were just the little things that stopped it being a 5 star read. I am looking forward to reading the next instalment of the Thursday Murder Club.
I love the idea of the book (a cozy mystery story involving elderly people wanting to crack the case with humor and laughs), but I'm not sure why I wasn't hooked. I started off with a physical copy to read but it took a while to get into and ended up pausing for some months until I got a hold of an audiobook. There were parts in the story that made me chuckle here and there, particularly with Elizabeth and Joyce, but everything else was a little muddled to me. A pro was that the chapters were really short, so I could keep going, but still, again, nothing fully grasped me, and I finally go to the end where the murder mystery was solved.
Maybe I'll give it a reread later on in life but for now, I'm a little sad it didn't live up to what I hoped it would be. ):
not as good as i was anticipating i fear but it was cute... i read it with my mom and it made her cry so three stars

“So, we were all witnesses to a murder,” says Elizabeth. “Which, needless to say, is wonderful.”
THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB
THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB
A 3.5 star read for me but maybe because I wasn't in the right frame of mind to fully enjoy what is an extremely well-written, tightly-woven murder mystery with sprightly sleuths and nice (there's no other word for it) police detectives.
I appreciated the bits about the challenges and fears of growing old, and had more than a few good laughs while reading. It was the case itself, including its resolution, that didn't intrigue me as much as I expected, clever as it was. Also, when one character is far too smart and resourceful, it saps the thrill of the chase.
Having said that, I'm still picking up the second book in this series, just to follow Elizabeth & Co on their sleuthing adventures.
Would highly recommend this if you're in the mood for an entertaining and enjoyable very English murder mystery with four smart and sassy older amateur detectives.
