The hell?! I literally didn't understand anything, but I liked it... It gave me Stranger Things vibes especially the 80s kids with bikes against weird monsters and stuff. I don't get the Apple logo. Also, I don't understand what is going on? There's swearing but it's cool. Mac is homophobic but it's the 80s so I guess... Also, I want to read the other volume too even though I'm completely lost, lol. Erin seems to talk a lot about Christianity and stuff. Anyways, it's nice!
In 1988, I totally had hair like the main character's. This graphic novel gets the nostalgia right in a big way, without being too reliant on that element. There's plenty of substance, as well as strong plotting reasons for the setting. Seeing those reasons emerge is a huge driver of this story - as we saw more clues about what was happening, I became increasingly desperate to find out what would happen next! Action packed, with a cleverly enticing mystery to pull you along - this story is addictive.
Do yourself a favor - if you decide to give this a try, just have Volume 2 standing by. I'll bet when you turn the last page of this volume, you'll have a burning need to read on!
Oh, and by the way, this has some of the best depictions of nightmares I've ever seen. It viscerally captures the messed up logic, mishmash of subconscious flotsam, and terrifying emotional impact that makes you wake up with your heart hammering after a bad dream. The subconscious flotsam also represents not just an individual girl's but that of the collective unconscious of 1980s America - brilliant!
Would have given five stars, but the repeated use of slurs—even though it was called out—felt unnecessarily damaging. Otherwise, this was interesting with a sort of Stranger Things vibe, but yeah, definitely would have preferred it without the slurs.
This was a great read from start to finish. I am combing through all my comics and graphic novels so I can get my hands on Volume 2. The artwork is amazing and the hues of purple, dark pink, and blues really set the 80's feel.
Four unique girls on a paper route come across a device that changes their life forever. Volume 1 gave me just enough information to get me hooked and wanting to read more. Erin and Mac remind me of myself. I am anxious & protective of my sister like Erin, yet I relate to being a tomboy like Mac.
I am not understanding the not so great reviews. Maybe because I haven't read Saga yet? Sure, Mac, is problematic with her insults, however this is set in the 80's. I am sure her character will develop as the series does.
If you love female leads, 80's nostalgia, and sci-fi this series if for you. I recommend listening to some 80's instrumentals to really set the mood.
I just wanna read more. This plot is so confusing but also interesting, because the keep you in the dark with the characters.
3.5
I liked this but ooof having the f slur and an aids joke back to back was what I was expecting within the first 10 pages. It does immediately go checked as to why the character said it but damn.
I decided to pick up this series because of SFF Yeah! and that it has been picked up for TV by Amazon. I can see how this immediately gets the Stranger Things comparison but they are completely different stories. The only similarities right off the bat are small towns and preteens.
Paper Girls is about a group of paper delivery girls who get drawn into something much bigger than themselves. And that means time travel.
I wanted to read this before watching the series. The premise is promising but I am unimpressed by the artwork so televisation will likely be an improvement.
Tricky, fascinating time travel story. There are 6 volumes, so assume the same review of each.
It is finished with volume 6, I'll say a little more there.
The art style is stunning and I'm obsessed with the color scheme. I'm super intrigued with the story, even though I'm still a little confused about what's going on. Can't wait to pick volume 2!
I'm a huge fan of Saga, and I wanted to try a new series on Free Comic Book Day when everything was on sale. I heard the hype about Vaughan's new work, and I don't think it was overestimated at all. Paper Girls is eerie, unsettling, and fascinating. It takes place in what appears to be a near future, but a lot is left unclear and adds to the haunting feeling of the story and art. The heroes, for paper delivery girls who have to be seriously hardcore to do their job, are all great examples of complex kids, being forced into adult roles and decisions. I'm eager to pick up the next volume.
I definitely got a Stranger Things vibe. Intrigued, and want to know how this develops.
I really enjoyed Paper Girls Vol 1. I could not put it down until completion.
Great story with a E.T./Stranger Things feel that fairly zips along. Looking forward to the next volume...
Four pre-teens investigating weird happenings in the middle of the 1980s. The Stranger Things comparison seems obvious, and while the books themselves are very different there's a similar level of quality in the story being told.
Story
At first this had a bit of a Stranger Things vibe. A group of 4 preteens riding around on bikes in the eighties. However once the story got going, the similarities ended there.
So far the premise has been pretty good. I'm really curious what is going on and why. I'm glad I can jump right into the second volume, because I have a TON of questions.
Artwork
I think the artwork on this is pretty good. It's not as good as Saga, but still pretty well done. The colors are a bit confusing at times. Everything has a sort of blue or pink overtone to it. It's good, but different from most comics I've read.
I don't understand. I didn't understand before and I still don't understand now. The point? I don't know. The plot? No clue. The enjoyment? Nowhere to me found. Personally, I would say give this a hard miss.
It's a strong start and I loved how quirky and weird this got and how fast. I went into this blind and simply got it because it's Brian Vaughan and when I realized it was about literal “paper girls” my heart swooned. Like, fuck yeah, I want a group of badass newspaper delivery girls.
Unsure how the rest of it'll go but I'll give the 2nd volume a chance.
A solid five star read. The art is beautiful and I love the colour palette. The story wowed me and kept me really entertained. I???m excited to read the second volume.
not nearly as good as saga but still really interesting and enjoyable. also can we talk about the colors??????? god
4 girls on a paper route get stuck in the middle of a time travel war (?) thumbs up
